Pits and Trenches

Pits and trenches form an important part of many industrial buildings. They provide space for machinery, services, drainage runs and specialist equipment, while allowing safe access for maintenance and inspection.
In warehouses, food production facilities, manufacturing plants and distribution centres, these structures must be designed to work with the building frame, floor slab and operational layout.
Ambrey Baker designs and constructs reinforced concrete pits and service trenches for plant installations, utilities and process infrastructure. With almost 40 years of experience in operational industrial environments, our team understands how to deliver these works safely while protecting the performance of the surrounding structure and floor systems.
Our work includes plant pits, service trenches for utilities, equipment bases, inspection pits and below-floor service corridors. Each installation is developed to accommodate structural loading, drainage requirements and safe access for maintenance teams.
Structural design is informed by recognised engineering standards, including BS EN 1992 for reinforced concrete design. Where relevant to the project, the works are also developed with regard to the applicable requirements of the Building Regulations 2010. Where pits or below-floor spaces require personnel access for inspection or maintenance, the design must also consider the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 and relevant Health and Safety Executive guidance.
In food production and other controlled environments, drainage layouts, finishes and access details must also suit the hygiene and maintenance requirements of the facility. Early technical coordination is essential to ensure these structures align with process needs, service routes and long-term maintenance access.
Our team works closely with structural engineers, M&E designers and equipment suppliers to ensure pits and trenches integrate with the building structure, service runs and operational requirements. This reduces construction risk and helps avoid costly changes during plant installation.
Many of these projects are delivered within live facilities where downtime must be managed carefully. Our experience in phased construction and safe segregation allows pits and trenches to be installed while protecting existing operations and maintaining site safety.
Ambrey Baker delivers pit and trench installations that are robust, well-coordinated and fully integrated with the wider industrial environment. Clients rely on our expertise to ensure below-floor infrastructure is delivered accurately and supports reliable long-term operation.
